(Typhaceae)
|
|
Cattail (Typha angustifolia) is a wetland rush with long, thick leaves with a brown, cigar-shaped flower. A long stem grows underground into a creeping mat. One flower head can produce 250,000 wind-dispersed seeds, which spread by wind and are viable for 100 years. The history of the introduction of Typha angustifolia to Hawaii is unknown; it was first discovered on Oahu in 1979. Typha angustifolia is native to Eurasia, Africa, and North America.
