Aloha, attached is a map of the modeled historic range of Wiliwili. This may be useful when defining the ecological importance and geographic extent of the species, and hopefully in the name of raising awareness and acquiring funding to combat EGW. A few things to keep in mind:
1) This is a map of the climatically suitable habitat for the species within islands on which it has been recorded. Other factors such as topography and substrate influence the distribution at finer scales. Moreover, this does not reflect the present distribution of the species, which has been greatly altered by human impact.
2) This is meant to reflect the area of extent, and does not indicate population density. For example, in some areas within this zone Wiliwili may be restricted to gulches, or may not be a dominant component of the vegetation.
3) Note the thin band of habitat along the coasts in more mesic regions. This is not an illusion. Wiliwili has been recorded within the mesic climate zone near the coast probably due to the drying influences of topography, wind, and salt spray. Such localities include Hakaaano on Molokai, Kaapahu on Maui, and (formerly) Kalapana on Hawaii.
I am happy to make adjustments to the style or content, where practical. I hope this is useful.
Mahalo, -Jon Price
