ABSTRACT
Weed biocontrol exploiting agents already present in Hawai'i is an alternative to current approaches using imported alien pathogens. Advantages include reduction of: risks to nontarget species, problems with establishment of the agent, and quarantine expenses. Mvrica faya is an ideal target species. It is the most important weed in nitrogen-poor, young volcanic sites common in Hawai'i. Botrytis cinerea fruit rot is the first disease of M. faya to be identified from Hawai'i. It caused up to 59% fruit loss in 1992. Infection also interferes with seed dispersal by birds, the principal dissemination agents. Feeding by two lepidopteran species predisposes fruits to infection. The insects also vector spores. B. cinerea occurs rarely on associated native plants but commonly on other weeds. Other disorders since identified on M. faya include leaf spots, shoot dieback, defoliation, and root rot. Potential use of causative agents for biocontrol is under investigation. Artificial inoculation, strain selection, and combination of various agents are under consideration as enhancements to weed control.
