Gardner, D. E. 1993. Hawaii's native rust flora. Inoculum: Newsletter of the Mycological Society of America 44(2):37.

ABSTRACT
Twenty-two rusts are currently recognized as native to Hawaii, including 13endemic species (those known only in Hawaii), and nine indigenous species (those naturally introduced but known from other localities as well). In general, the indigenous status is more tentative than is the endemic status. Hawaii is the most remote major island group from a continental land mass in the world. The relatively small number of native rusts is attributed to this isolation rather than to unfavorable environmental influences. Like their endemic hosts, endemic rusts display unusual or distinctive characteristics resulting from evolution in isolation: The endemic rust flora is disharmonic; e.g., four species are members of the genus Atelocaudaon a single host, Acacia Koa. All endemic rusts are limited to endemic hosts and are typically rare or infrequent, limited by localized populations of the hosts, and/or perhaps by incomplete rust/host adaptation. Two rusts are known only from original 1920's collections. All are autoecious and have abbreviated life cycles, most being microcyclic or species of Uredo. Teliospore germination and nuclear behavior are often atypical.
