ABSTRACT
The morphological structures of various seed coats were studied with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Emphasis was placed on alterations in impermeable, hard seed coats that were exposed to: 1) specific microorganisms (Rhizoctonia sp., Fusarium sp., Pythium sp.), 2) fire, and 3) temperature fluctuations. After specific treatment some seeds were processed by critical point drying or freeze drying. Coated with C and Au-Pd and viewed in the SEM. Seeds exposed to microorganisms were disinfested and then germinated on agar; while seeds from other treatments were sown in sand:peat:perlite (1: 1: 1) for germination studies.
