ABSTRACT
The Florida blackberry, R. argutus is one of the most troublesome introduced weeds in Hawaii. Biological control efforts against this species must utilize biotic agents that are specific enough to pose no threat to two native species, R. hawaiiensis and R. macraei.In order to determine the specificity of the rust P. violaceum against the weed and the species of Hawaii Rubus, several tests were carried out under quarantine conditions in Chile. The introduced Rubus spp and Rubus constrictus as a check were inoculated with the rust utilizing four techniques including immersion, rubbing, immersion + rubbing, and simulated natural infection. Results of the tests showed that P. violaceum attacked check plants, particularly when utilizing the immersion technique, but all inoculations on to R. argutus, R. hawaiiensis, and R. macraei plants proved negative. The utilization of other more pathogenic strains or of mixed inoculum of the rust is discussed.
