Gardner, D. E. 1988. Legume tree rusts. Proc., 5th International Congress of Plant Pathology, Kyoto, Japan. Abstracts.120

ABSTRACT
Rusts of woody leguminous hosts are distributed throughout warmer regions of the world. Ravenelia, the third largest genus of rust fungi, occurs predominantly on leguminous trees and shrubs. Ravenelia has elaborate discoid, pedicellate teliospores heads subtended by hygroscopic cysts. Urediniospores are uniquely ornamented.Uromycladium spp. occur on Acacia and Albizzia hosts native to Australia and Java. Teliospores are usually borne on septate, branched pedicel with spore-like hygroscopic cysts. Some species produce distinctive branch galls. Atelocauda, mostly on Acacia hosts in the Pacific region, is probably closely allied to Uromycladium and to Endoraecium, a genus of endocyclic Acacia rusts in Hawaii. These three genera have uredinoid aecia and distinct, reticulately ornamented spores. Several species of Maravalia, and approximately 16 additional, mostly small genera of rusts occur on woody leguminous hosts. Like those discussed above, these genera are typically autoecious and have type 5 or 7 spermogonia. Differences in spermogonial type indicate that several rusts of Acacia spp. formerly included in Uromyces belong elsewhere. Other leguminous tree rusts currently included in Uromyces and Uredo should be reevaluated as to their probable affinities based on spermogonial type.
