Gardner, D. E. . Unpublished: Gorse (Ulex europeus) biocontrol Unpublished
ABSTRACT
DOA plant pathologist Eloise Killgore took the lead in biocontrol of gorse because this noxious weed occurs mainly on non-NPS lands, although it is encroaching in Haleakala NP. Gorse has become established in extensive stands on the slopes of Mauna Kea. However, the discovery of a rust fungus in the UK on gorse as a potential biocontrol agent led to my involvement because of my expertise in this group of fungi. The rust was demonstrated host-specific in quarantine tests and was demonstrated to be destructive to gorse itself. It was released in colonized areas of Mauna Kea on Hawaii Island, but to date has not spread sufficiently from the release sites to prove effective. As a note of interest on the subject of gorse biocontrol, while in New Zealand I was able to observe a mite that has been released in that country for gorse control in the vicinity of Rangitato River on the South Island.
