Gardner, D. E. . Unpublished: Coconut tree decline at Pu`u Honua o Honaunau Unpublished

ABSTRACT
I was requested to examine several coconut trees with drooping fronds and discolored fruit. The county agent was also aware of the problem and had suggested that a nutrient deficiency may be responsible, and recommended a fertilization treatment for those trees in early stages of the decline. Also, a new species of pathogenic Phytophthora was known to occur in Hawaii. I investigated tissue from coconut fruit with dark lesions in an attempt to discover oogonia (fungal fruiting structures) of the Phytophthora and thereby diagnose the disease. None were found, and the park continued the fertilization treatments. In checking later, resource managers seemed satisfied that the treatments were helping. Thus, I carried out no further investigations. (Coconut lethal yellowing, a highly devastating disease caused by a phytoplasma, has not yet been found in Hawaii. The possibility of this disease having been introduced to Hawaii is of prime consideration whenever a coconut disease is investigated).
