Gardner, D. E. . Unpublished: Circular (or spiraling) ring spot on akala (Rubus hawaiensis) leaves Unpublished

ABSTRACT
This condition was brought to my attention by Cliff Davis, DOA biocontrol entomologist, who found it in the Ola`a Tract. The symptoms resemble what would result if a leaf were placed on a miniature electric stove and were burned in a spiral or circular pattern resembling the burner coil. Similar examples were found in remote regions of Kipahulu Valley. None of the researchers or long-time naturalists in Hawaii to whom I showed the symptoms had any suggestion as to what might cause them. In an effort to determine whether a ring spot virus might be involved, I sent symptomatic leaves to Dr. Richard Converse at Washington State University, an expert in blackberry diseases. He tested the leaves with standard methods used to detect viruses but found none. He had no other suggestions as to what might cause the symptoms. I have not been successful in attempts over the years to find akala leaves with symptoms for further observation. Therefore the cause of this ring pattern remains unknown.
