Gardner, D. E. . Unpublished: Herbicidal control of koa haole (Luceana lucocephala). Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Unpublished

ABSTRACT
With technician Eric Eldredge, herbicidal control methods for haole koa were tested. Plots were established in thickets near the UH Manoa campus. Stump treatment to prevent resprouting in clear-cut stands was emphasized. The unpublished report appears to be no longer available, but we found that of the herbicides tested, including those listed above, almost all of them controlled stump resprouting satisfactorily. Thus, the problem of preventing reestablishment of clear-cut stand was shown to not be prohibitive. However, the problem lay in the establishment of seedlings, and control of these, in clear-cut areas. Roundup was shown to be effective as a spray for seedlings. Eldredge worked at developing a device that could be used to shear off thicket-sized haole koa near soil level and treat the stumps with herbicide in the same motion. The cutting tool portion of the device was produced, but the herbicide treatment mechanism was not perfected, thus the tool was never used in the field. My herbicidal control program, through Eldredge, responded to HAVO resource management requests to test methods of herbicidal control on a number of invasive species in response to sudden acquisition of funding for this purpose. Among species to be controlled were nasturtium in Kipuka Puaulu and an invasive gourd. Difficulties arose when RM pressured my program for results before adequate experimentation, including long-range observation, could be completed. RM was thus not satisfied with my program's involvement and requested that other approaches be used to determine herbicidal effectiveness.
