Gardner, D. E. . Unpublished: Herbicidal treatment of buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) at Pu`u Kohola Heiau Unpublished

ABSTRACT
In 1978 alien buffel grass colonized much of the dry site of Pu`u Kohola on Hawaii Island's Kona coast, obscuring a small endemic fern, Ophyoglossum sp. I was requested to determine whether Roundup could be used to control the buffel grass without harming the Ophyoglossum. I established small treatment plots at the site and found that buffel grass was, in fact, sensitive to Roundup but that not enough plants of Ophyoglossum could be found to provide a reliable indication of their sensitivity to the herbicide. Eventually it was decided not to treat the site at that time because of the low numbers, and uncertainties, with Ophyoglossum. An unpublished report was submitted to the superintendent of the Pu`u Honua o Hounaunau/Pu`u Kohola group.
