Gardner, D. E. . Unpublished: Herbicidal treatment of Christmasberry. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Unpublished

ABSTRACT
Christmasberry (Schinus terebinthifolius) is the same species as the tree referred to as Brazilian holly or Brazilian peppertree in the Everglades. It is an aggressive invader forming thickets in NPS lowlands, including the lower Kipahulu Valley of Haleakala NP. Mature trees, with trunks up to 50 cm in diameter were not amenable to the cut branch approach used for faya. I conducted tests at the Kipahulu Valley site to determine the sensitivity of Schinus to glyphosate by drilling more or less vertical holes of varying depth into the lower trunks with a brace & bit and adding concentrated Roundup. Schinus was shown to be sensitive to the chemical, requiring as little as 5-10 ccs to kill an entire tree and prevent resprouting.
