Gardner, D. E. . Unpublished: Microorganism degradation of adobe Indican ruins at Chaco Canyon National Monument. Mississippi NPS Science Center. Unpublished

ABSTRACT
The superintendent of Chaco Canyon NM in New Mexico came under the impression that a type of bacteria was capable of degrading the adobe masonry of the ancient Indian structures that are features of the park. I don't recall the background of this concern, but on the basis of my work with micro fungi, I was requested to travel to Chaco Canyon to examine the ruins to determine whether any evidence of such degradation could be found. I was unable to distinguish biotic deterioration from that resulting from other causes (e.g., weathering) so didn't pursue the project further. I recommended that if there was still concern, a specialist in masonry-dwelling bacteria should be consulted who could more readily address the problem.
