ABSTRACT
Ozark Scenic Riverways, a NPS area in Southeastern Missouri, was considering building a sewage treatment facility to accommodate its growing number of visitors, and sought expertise at the NPS Science Center to determine methods to assess the environmental effects to the soil of the planned spray field (a feature to provide aeration as part of the treatment process). Although no one at the Science Center had direct experience working with such a system, or doing the type of monitoring work required, a number of scientists traveled to Ozark Scenic Riverways to examine the site and discuss the project with NPS personnel. My own proposed contribution was to have been an assessment of soil fungi, using the type of selective media that I had used to assess Pythium spp. in soil in the study I had conducted at the University of Georgia. This proposal, along with other scientists' proposals, were not readily accepted and no further input to the project was sought by or from our staff.
