Gardner, D. E. . Unpublished: Control of alien plants with herbicides, Mississippi NPS Science Center Unpublished

ABSTRACT
Invasive trees and shrubs in Everglades NP was the primary focus, including: Schinus terebinthifolius (referred to as Brazilian holly or Brazilian peppertree on the mainland. This is the same species, also invasive in Hawaii, with the common name Christmasberry). Casuarina equisetifolia (called Australian beefwood, Australian pine, or ironwood on the mainland. The same species occurs in Hawaii where it is also called casuarina). Melaleuca leucadendra (called cajeput tree or paper bark in the Everglades. The same species occurs in Hawaii, with the common name paper bark, where it poses some degree of invasive threat in lower Kipahulu Valley). In conjunction with another staff scientist, Dr. Bill Anderson, I carried out herbicidal trails on ruins of 19th century forts, under NPS jurisdiction, in the Pensacola area of the Florida panhandle. The forts were overgrown with a variety of woody and herbaceous weeds, which were hastening the deterioration of the masonry structures. Most of the herbicides used were in experimental stages of development and were provided directly by the manufactures for this purpose. The chemicals included Roundup, a Monsanto product with the generic name glyphosate. This product was later to be released commercially and was to become one of the most widely accepted and applied herbicides throughout the national parks. One of the reasons for its wide acceptance, aside from its effectiveness on a number of grass and dichotomous weeds, was its relative safety, and ease with which it was thought to break down in the soil. None of this work was published in other than report form.
