Habit:  herb

Description:  "Erect branching annual herb to 60 cm tall, with ovate acute, or variably shaped leaves, mostly 1-5 (rarely to 7-8) cm long, 1.5-2 (-3) cm wide, the upper ones narrower, smaller and subsessile, the lower ones with petioles 1-3 cm long, surfaces minutely puberulent, base decurrent; heads 20-25-flowered, more or less corymbose, shortly pedunculate, 6-7 mm long; bracts of involucre acute-acuminate, 4-5 mm long, in 4 series, puberulent; corollas violet or pinkish-violet, about 4 mm long, exserted; achenes appressed-pubescent, 1.5-2 mm long; inner hairs of pappus 4-5 mm long, outer ones very short"  (Stone, 1970; p. 593).

Habitat/ecology:  "Common in gardens, field and plantation crops, pastures, roadsides and waste areas"  (Holm et al., 1997; p. 903).  "Occasional to common in waste places" (Whistler, 1988; p. 13).

Abundant in Guam chiefly in waste ground (Stone, 1970; p. 593).  In Hawai‘i, "naturalized in urban areas and usually relatively dry, disturbed sites" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 373).  In Fiji, "often locally abundant as a naturalized weed in open places, villages, cultivated fields, and pastures, along roads, and on open slopes" (Smith, 1991; pp. 263-264).  In Niue, "a very common weed of plantations and waste places all over Niue" (Sykes, 1970; p. 69).  In New Guinea, "a weed of gardens, roadsides, waste land and pasture. From sea Level to about 1200 m" (Henty & Pritchard, 1975; p. 84). In Tonga, "a weed of plantations and waste areas" (Yuncker, 1959; p. 265).

Propagation:  "The achenes are wind-dispersed" (Stone, 1970; p. 593).

Native range:  "Presumably indigenous in southeastern Asia and Malesia, now adventive in most southern Pacific archipelagoes and elsewhere in the tropics, including Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and America" (Smith, 1991; pp. 263-254). Fosberg et al. (1979; p. 292) list as native to Micronesia.
