Common name(s): [more details]

English: coat buttons, tridax daisy, wild daisy

Fijian: tubua leka, tumbualeka, voti

French: herbe caille

Japanese: kotobukigiku

Spanish: cadillo chisaca, flor amarilla, hierba del toro, panquica, rosilla

Habit:  herb

Description:  "A semi-prostrate perennial herb; taproot slender, wavy with many lateral branches; stems more or less ascending, 30 to 50 cm high, branched, round, sparsely to very hairy; leaves simple, opposite, lanceolate to ovate, 3 to 7 cm long, 1 to 4 cm wide, with irregularly toothed margins; base wedge-shaped, shortly-petioled, hairy on both surfaces; inflorescence a terminal involucrate flower head or capitulum, 1 to 2 cm across, solitary on erect peduncle 10 to 25 cm long; involucre 3-seriate, ovate, acute to shortly acuminate, 5 to 6 mm long; receptacle with oblong, hairy scales; ray flowers 3-dentate, few, pale yellow; disk flowers 5-dentate, tubular, yellow to brownish-yellow, with recurved hairy segments; fruit a black achene covered with fine, pale hairs giving a grayish-brown appearance, 2 mm long, 1 mm wide at apex, base narrow; pappus in one row of wide scales, unequal in length, 5 to 6 mm long.  The 3-seriate and hairy involucre, the 3-dentate pale yellow ray flowers, opposite leaves with toothed margins, and semi-prostrate habit are the distinguishing features of this species"  (Holm et al., 1997; p. 864).

"Pubescent herb with prostrate ascending stems and erect peduncles with terminal heads; leaves opposite, broadly lanceolate, coarsely toothed, acute or subacute, cuneate at base, hispid on both surfaces, 1-5 cm long, 1-3.5 cm wide, on petioles 5-15 mm long; peduncle pilose, 10-30 cm long, erect; head about 1 cm long, 2 cm wide; bracts of involucre 3-seriate, puberulent; ray-florets few (about 6), with white ligule about 4-5 mm long; disc-florets yellow; achenes pilose, 2 mm long; pappus 5-6 mm long"  (Stone, 1970; p. 586).

Habitat/ecology:  "Occurs throughout the tropical and subtropical belt of the world and is frequently found in annual crops, roadsides, pastures, fallow land and waste areas, and occasionally in lawns, perennial crops and nurseries.  It is particularly well adapted to coarse-textured soils of tropical regions and is found from sea level to 1000 m. Its wide distribution and importance as a weed are due to its spreading stems and abundant seed production" (Holm et al., 1997; p. 864).

In Guam, "common in waste ground, especially limestone"  (Stone, 1970; p. 586).  In Hawai‘i, "naturalized and relatively common primarily in low elevation, dry, disturbed habitats" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 370-372).  In Fiji, "found in some local abundance at elevations from near sea level to 600 m as a naturalized weed in villages, gardens, and plantations, on grassy hills and open slopes, and along roadsides" (Smith, 1991; pp. 288-289).  In New Guinea, "a weed of gardens, cultivation and pastures; often in short grassland. From near sea level to about 700 m, very common" (Henty & Pritchard, 1975; p. 83). "Occasional in dry, sunny places" (Whistler, 1988; p. 13).  "Abundantly naturalized in the lowlands of central and southern Taiwan, along exposed, dry roadsides, on waste grounds and in lawns"  (Digital Flora of Taiwan).

Propagation:  Seed

Native range:  Tropical America, now a pan-tropical weed (Stone, 1970; p. 586). Mexico, Central America, Venezuela and Colombia to Peru and Bolivia (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 370-372).
