Description:  "Erect herb to 50-90 cm tall, branched dichotomously, leaves ovate or elliptic, mostly 5-15 cm long and 2-9 cm wide, crenate-serrate, acute, abruptly narrowed at base to the 1-5 cm long petiole mostly pubescent on both surfaces, usually 3-nerved; heads solitary or several together, subsessile or pedunculate, cylindric-campanulate, 10-20-flowered, 8-10 mm long; involucral bracts 2-seriate, usually only 4 or 5, nearly 1 cm long; all corollas yellow, about 3.5-4 mm long; ligules bifid; achenes of 2 kinds, those of ray-florets winged, glabrous, those of disc-florets unwinged, often puberulent, all nearly black, 4-5 mm long, awned"  (Stone, 1970; pp. 585-586).

Habitat/ecology:  "Adapted to many environments.  It is particularly well adapted to the partial shade found under jute and plantation crops like tea, coffee, bananas, cacao, and rubber.  Plants appear in moist soil and along roads and foot trails"  (Holm et al., 1997; p. 819).  "Abundant in frequently disturbed areas, a major weed in gardens, and an intermediate weed along roadsides and in crops and plantations.  The plant grows best where the soil is moist and fertile and where there is plenty of light." (Swarbrick, 1997; p. 19)

"In Guam abundant, usually around houses and along roadsides"  (Stone, 1970; pp. 585-586).  In Hawai‘i, "naturalized in relatively low elevation, disturbed areas" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 360).  In Fiji, "found from near sea level to about 200 m as a naturalized weed in open areas, villages, cultivated areas, and along roads, often locally abundant" (Smith, 1991; pp. 276-277).  In Niue, "a very common plantation weed that is also found less commonly in many waste places" (Sykes, 1970; p. 68). In New Guinea, "a common weed of cultivation; palatable to livestock and so not a problem in pasture; sometimes fed to pigs. From sea level to about 1000 m" (Henty & Pritchard, 1975; p. 82). In Tonga, "weed in plantations and waste areas" (Yuncker, 1959; p. 268).

Propagation:  Seed

Native range:  Tropical America, now a pan-tropical weed (Stone, 1970; pp. 585-586).
