Habit: herb
Description: "Low-growing perennial herb, somewhat woody at the base. Leaves alternate, simple; blade oblong to obovate, 6-15 mm long, lower surface covered with long stellate hairs, margins serrate. Flowers axillary, solitary; corolla reddish pink, with yellow at the base, somewhat rotate with 5 lobes, lobes ca. 5 mm long; stamens numerous, united in a tubular column, yellow; style branches reddish plink. Fruit a schizocarp, depressed ovate, 5 mm across, with 6 sections, each with 2 short awns on top; seed 1 per section, dark brown" (McMullen, 1999; p. 225).
