Habit:  herb

Description:  "Rhizomes creeping, sometimes above ground, sometimes underground; leaves erect, ensiform, to 1 m long, rather thick, fibrous-fleshy, variously striped and banded with white, yellow or shades of green, apex sharp-pointed; scape shorter than or as long as the leaves, slender, erect, strict; flowers yellowish-white or tinged greenish, arranged in a raceme, perianth basally cylindric, lobes revolute; marcescent in age; stamens 6; fruit a small globose orange berry with fleshy seeds" (Stone, 1970; p. 132).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "spread vegetatively from areas where they are cultivated"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1347). In New Caledonia, "souvent planté, surtout à Nouméa, et parfois naturalisé près de la ville" (MacKee, 1994; p. 94).

Propagation:  Seed, potentially attractive to fruit-eating birds, and rhizomes.

Native range:  Tropical Africa, now widely cultivated and naturalized.
