Habit:  tree

Description:  "Trees; young branches terete, glabrate, often with conspicuous leaf scars.  Leaves dark green on upper surface, lower surface pale green, alternate, variable in shape and size, but usually elliptic, 10-25 cm long, 5-10 cm wide, margins entire.  Flowers in pubescent inflorescences shorter than leaves, clustered at the tips of the branches or on short, lateral young branches; tepals equal, ca. 5 mm long, densely pubescent; fertile stamens 9, staminodia present; anthers tetrathecal; ovary pubescent.  Fruit large, pear-shaped, up to 10 cm or more long, not subtended by persistent tepals, cupule absent" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 847-848).

Habitat/ecology:  Trees grow from sea level up to 2250 m altitude. It cannot stand waterlogging. Branches are easily damaged by wind. It needs to be in a frost-free location or where frosts are rare. (Ecoport)

In Hawai‘i, "naturalized in disturbed mesic areas, 10-66 m" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 847-848). Moist uplands in the Galápagos Islands (McMullen, 1999; p. 64).

Propagation:  Seed. Spread by cattle and pigs in the Galapagos Islands (McMullen, 1999; p. 64).

Native range:  Central America, widely cultivated.
