Habit:  herb

Description:  "Subshrub, somewhat fleshy, to 1 m high (3 1/4 ft) or more, with milky sap and often with zigzag stems.  Leaves simple, alternate, blade ovate, elliptic, or obovate, 4-10 cm long (1 5/8 - 4 in), often variegated with white or yellow.  Flowers continuously through the year; flowers several, in cyathia borne in terminal clusters, each cyathium conical, surrounded by two-lipped red bract 8-12 mm long (1/4 - 1/2 in) with a sac-like base.  Fruit a shallowly three-lobed ovoid capsule 5-8 mm long (about 1/4 in)"  (Whistler, 2000; pp. 347-348).
