Description:  "Creeping accumbent perennial; culms slender, elongate; sheaths ciliate; nodes usually pubescent; ligule short, fringed with short hairs; blades narrowly elliptic, acuminate, 3-16 cm long, 6-25 mm wide, usually thinly pubescent; panicles 10-30 cm long, erect or suberect, of about 10 rather well-spaced racemes, these ascending or spreading and up to 10 cm long, usually shorter; spikelets lanceolate, green or purplish, sparsely puberulent; lower glume with awn to 16 mm long, upper glume with awn 2-3 mm long; lower lemma mucronate"  (Stone, 1970; p. 214).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "naturalized and usually common in shaded sites in mesic valleys and mesic forest, 245-500 m" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 1563, 1565). In Guam, "usually in forests or woods, often among rocks in somewhat dry but shaded localities" (Stone, 1970; p. 214). In Fiji, "fairly common from sea level to about 900 m on open hillsides, river banks, beaches, and on plantations; it also occurs along forest trails and in wet, open places, sometimes forming dense tangles in crest clearings" (Smith, 1979; p. 343).  In Tonga, "a frequent weed in plantations and waste areas"  (Yuncker, 1959; p. 61).

Propagation:  Seed

Native range:  "Tropical regions of the old and new worlds." (Smith, 1979; p. 343). Native or an early introduction to many Pacific islands. Considered an early introduction to Fiji (Smith, 1979; p. 343) and Niue (Sykes, 1970; p. 257). Fosberg et al. (1987; p. 50) list it as native to Micronesia.
