Habit:  herb

Description:  "Coarse erect herb with large oblong-ovate to lanceolate leaves 30-60 cm long by 10-20 cm wide, subsessile, sometimes shortly decurrent on the stem; apex acute; surfaces pubescent; inflorescence pubescent; flowers pink, calyx 1-2 cm long, puberulent; corolla 3-5 cm long, puberulent; filaments puberulent at base, corolla lobes ovate; ovary glabrous; capsule 1.5-1.7 cm long" (Stone, 1970; p. 519).

Habitat/ecology:  "Often escaping into areas along roadsides, fence rows, fallow fields, and other disturbed habitats" (Wiggins & Porter, 1971; p. 475). In Hawai‘i, "naturalized in dry, rarely mesic, disturbed sites, usually coastal, 0-25 (-140) m" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1262). In Fiji, "cultivated and also naturalized on edges of cultivated areas and in talasinga from near sea level to about 400 m" (Smith, 1991; p. 37). In Niue, occasionally adventive (Sykes, 1970; p. 196). In New Caledonia, "existe aujourd'hui surtout à l'état subspontané, en peuplements parfois considérables" (MacKee, 1994; p. 131).
