Description:  "Small trees or shrubs 3-6 m tall; stems 4-angled, glabrous.  Leaves glossy, membranous, elliptic to elliptic-ovate, 20-45 cm long, 7-25 cm wide, glabrous, petioles stout, 1.5-2 cm long, stipules connate or distinct, 10-12 mm long, apex entire or 2-3-lobed.  Flowers perfect, ca. 75-90 in ovoid to globose heads, peduncles 10-30 mm long; calyx a truncate rim; corolla white, 5-lobed, the tube greenish white, 7-9 mm long, the lobes oblong-deltate, ca. 7 mm long; stamens 5, scarcely exserted; style ca. 15 mm long.  Syncarp yellowish white, fleshy, 5-10 cm long, ca. 3-4 cm in diameter, soft and foetid when ripe.  Seeds with a distinct air chamber"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1157).

Habitat/ecology:  "Noni is most competitive on sands and loamy sands but will grow on soils of all other textures if planted and protected from competition. It also grows well on very rocky soils. Although it grows naturally only a few meters above sea level, noni can be cultivated on sites up to 800 m or more above sea level (Stevens and others 2001). The species tolerates salty soils and salt spray. It is intermediate in shade tolerance, growing under the canopy of forests as well as in the open. Noni grows naturally on the edges of mangroves, in coastal forests, and on the landward side of beach strand vegetation. The species is grown in plantations, as an ornamental, and as a garden medicinal tree"  (Wildland shrubs of the United States and its territories).

In Hawai‘i, "a Polynesian introduction originally cultivated for its medicinal and dye properties, now naturalized in relatively dry to mesic sites, 0-450 m, in solution pits near the coast, disturbed hala forest, dry to mesic forest, and alien grassland"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1157).  In Fiji, "cultivated or abundantly naturalized along roads and rocky coasts, in thickets, often along creeks or on the edges of mangrove swamps, or in open or even dense forest at elevations from near sea level to 450 m"  (Smith, 1988; p. 334).

Propagation:  Seed.  "In its native habitat, the seeds of noni are probably dispersed by fruit bats and other mammals"  (Wildland shrubs of the United States and its territories).

Native range:  Southeastern Asia through northern Australia; "widely naturalized throughout tropics, exact native range obscure" (GRIN).  "Probably indigenous in Indo-Malesia, but with an extended distribution throughout the Pacific, including Hawaii, and other tropical areas.  It is considered an aboriginal introduction into Pacific areas.  In places it is thoroughly established as a common understory plant in coastal forest"  (Smith, 1988; p. 334).
