Habit:  shrub

Description:  "Shrubs up to 3 (-4) m tall, glabrate or sparsely pubescent, but pedicels densely pubescent and petioles and stems with lines of simple and bifurcate hairs.  Leaf blades lanceolate to ovate, 4-10 (-15) cm long, margins crenate-serrate, apex acuminate, base obtuse.  Flowers solitary or clustered, pendulous, pedicels to 1.5-4 cm long; involucral bracts 6-8, spatulate, 12-18 mm long, 2-3 mm wide; calyx tubular, 14-20 mm long, the lobes ciliate; corolla red or sometimes white, 5.5-6.5 cm long; staminal column and styles slightly exserted.  Fruit apparently unknown"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 895).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "cultivated and sparingly naturalized in disturbed mesic sites, 0-330 m" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 895).

Native range:  "Probably native to Mexico and now in cultivation throughout tropical and warm temperate regions worldwide" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 895).
