Habit: succulent
Description: "Glabrous and glaucous perennial herbs, stems 5-10 cm long, unbranched, reproducing vegetatively by adventitious shoots from the base. Leaves simple, usually ternate, subcylindrical, 3-15 cm long, 0.3-0.6 cm wide, lower surface sulcate, often spotted with reddish brown, margins near apex with 3-9 conical teeth between which spoon-shaped bulbils are produced. Flowers in corymbose cymes 10-20 cm wide, each one pendent on pedicels 0.5-2 cm long; sepals connate, the tube 0.3-0.6 cm long, the lobes triangular, 0.5-0.7 cm long; corolla orange to scarlet, 2.5-4 cm long, the lobes obovate, 0.5-1 cm long" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 568).
Habitat/ecology: In Hawaii, "naturalized in low elevation, dry, disturbed sites" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 568). In New Caledonia, "cultivé et naturalisé, mais moins souvent que l'espèce précédente" (MacKee, 1994; p. 42).
Propagation: Vegetatively, from plantlets and bulbils.
Native range: Madagascar; also cultivated and naturalized elsewhere (GRIN).
