Habit: vine
Description: "Vines; the stems slender or stout, trailing or less commonly twining, covered with long spreading yellow bristly trichomes; annual. Leaves palmately 7-9-lobed, often almost to the base of the blade, to 10.5 cm long and 13 cm wide in outline, the lobes narrowly oval to obovate, narrowed above and below, subacute apically, 1.6-7 cm long, 1-2.8 cm wide, thinly pubescent to strigose on both surfaces. Inflorescences of few-flowered, bracteate heads on pubescent peduncles up to 14 cm long, the bracts foliaceous, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, pubescent outside, the outer to 5 cm long and 6 mm wide, the inner narrower and shorter. Flowers subsessile; sepals lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 8-12 mm long, pubescent; corolla white, pink or purple, if colored then with a darker throat, funnelform, 3.5-5 cm long. Fruits capsular, brown, ovoid, 8-9 mm long, glabrous; seeds black, 4 mm long, grey pubescent" (Dassanayake, 1981; p. 336).
Habitat/ecology: In Sri Lanka, "plants occur in disturbed sites such as grasslands, bushlands, cultivated ground and roadsides" (Dassanayake, 1981; p. 336).
Propagation: Seed
Native range: Tropical Africa and Asia, now found in most tropical countries (Smith, 2002; pp. 48-49).
