Habit:  vine

Description:  "Annual vines; stems slender and herbaceous, glabrous to sparsely pubescent.  Leaf blades ovate to suborbicular, 3 (-7)-lobed, 2-15 cm long, glabrous or very sparsely pubescent, margins entire or dentate, apex acute to acuminate, base cordate.  Flowers few to several in cymes or colitary, pedicels 5-7 mm long or sometimes longer; sepals oblong to elliptic, 1.5-3 mm long, glabrous, apex obtuse or truncate, outer 2 sepals with a subterminal bristle 1.6-6 mm long, corolla red to reddish yellow, often yellow in the throat, salverform, 2.5-4.5 cm long, the tube 0.1-0.2 cm in diameter, the lib 1.8-2.5 cm in diameter.  Capsules subglobose, 0.6-0.8 cm long.  Seeds dark brown or black, pyriform, dorsal surface with usually 2 lines of short dark hairs"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 556).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "naturalized in disturbed sites" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 556).  In Fiji, "occurring as a roadside weed and in canefields, sometimes cultivated" (Smith, 1991; pp. 57-58).  "Occasional in disturbed places in Tonga" (Whistler, 1988; p. 14). In New Guinea, "a weed of roadsides, gardens, young plantations, formerly often cultivated as an ornamental. Well established in a few lowland areas (to 700 m), mostly with seasonal rainfall" (Henty & Pritchard, 1975; p. 90). In Tonga, "common in roadside thickets and waste areas" (Yuncker, 1959; pp. 226-227). In New Caledonia, "très dispersé en fourrés secondaires mais rarement abondant" (MacKee, 1994; p. 41). "Cette plante est souvent cultivée comme plante ornementale et ± naturalisée. Elle se rencontre, dans notre territoire, en bordure de chemins, dans les fourrés secondaires sur alluvions, sur les berges de rivière, sur terratin schisteux et humide" (Heine, 1984; pp. 72, 74).
