Habit:  herb

Description:  "Herb 18-36 inches tall.  Leaves in whorls of 3-7; petioles 0.5-2.5 inches long; blades lanceolate, elliptic, or oblanceolate, usually 2-4 x 0.75-1.33 inches, green, red, bronze, purplish or variously variegated, base ± wedge-shaped, margins shallowly toothed, apex pointed. Flowers solitary; peduncle absent, pedicels 1.5-5 inches long; lateral sepals tailed, corolla ± flat, 1.25-2 inches in diameter, red, orange, magenta, white, pink, or purple, petal apexes grooved to ± deeply notched, spur curved, 1.25-2.5 inches long; ovary glabrous.  Fruit spindle-shaped, 0.7-1.33 inches long, glabrous"  (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p 172).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawaii, both lower, warmer elevations and in cooler uplands (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p. 172).

Native range:  Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands; also cultivated (GRIN).  New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and New Ireland (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p. 172).
