Habit:  herb

Description:  "Annual herbs; stems erect, 1.5-6 dm long, young parts and nodes appressed pilose.  Leaves oblong-elliptic to oblong-obovate, 5-15 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, moderately pilose, petioles 1-1.5 cm long, the upper 1-2 sets of leaves sessile.  Flowers in heads or spikes 1.7-2.5 cm in diameter, these solitary or in clusters of 2-4, bracts ovate, 3-6 mm long, apex acuminate, bracteoles white, pink, or purple, with a conspicuous dorsal crest 7-12 mm long extending throughout, notched at apex, margins serrate; calyx 6-6.5 mm long; stigmas 2.  Utricles 1.5-2.5 mm long.  Seed reddish brown, 1.5-2 mm long"  (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 192-193, 1857).

Habitat/ecology:  Mostly cultivated in Hawai‘i with some naturalizing (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 192-193, 1857).  In Fiji, cultivated and sparingly naturalized near sea level" (Smith, 1981; pp. 293-294).  In Niue, occasionally cultivated hear houses but more often seen growing as a casual on adjacent waste ground" (Sykes, 1997; pp. 111-112). In New Caledonia, "cultivé dans les jardins et parfois échappé" (MacKee, 1994; p. 12).  In Papua New Guinea, "occurring as a weed on waste lands but possibly not fully naturalized, at 0-600(?) m altitude"  (Womersley, 1978; p. 39).
