Description: "Erect annual or biennial herbs 1-4 (-10) dm tall, sparsely to moderately woolly. Lower leaves spatulate to oblanceolate, 2-5 (-9) cm long, 0.3-2 cm wide, gradually becoming reduced up the stem, uppermost leaves oblanceolate to oblong or even linear, upper surface glabrate or sparsely white tomentose, lower surface densely white tomentose. Heads in terminal, spike-like, sometimes interrupted clusters, sometimes subtended by a few small leafy bracts; involucral bracts pale brown or purple, woolly pubescent at base; pappus bristles connate to form a ring at base, deciduous as a unit" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 321, 1861).
Habitat/ecology: In Hawaii, "naturalized and relatively common in dry to wet, disturbed habitats, especially along roadsides, in pastures, and on open lava, from near sea level up to 2,100 m" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 321). In Tonga, "uncommon in disturbed places" (Whistler, 1988; p. 11).
