Description: "Annual herbs; stems 1.5-3.5 dm long, glabrous. Leaves bright green, caducous below, alternate below, becoming opposite or ternate above, membranous, floral leaves smaller, often congested and reflexed, spatulate, 1-1.4 cm long, 0.8-1.2 cm wide, margins entire, apex rounded, base acute or cuneate, petioles 0-0.6 cm long, stipules absent. Cyathia solitary in the forks of the upper branches, peduncles 0.6-1 mm long; involucre pale green, ca. 1 mm high, glabrous, glands 4, green, crescent-shaped, ca. 0.5 mm long, with slender or filiform horns 0.5-0.7 mm long. Capsules broadly ovoid, shallowly 3-lobed, 1.8-2 mm long, 2-2.2 mm in diameter. Seeds gray, ovoid-oblong, weakly 6-angled, ca. 1.5 mm long, ca. 0.8 mm wide, coarsely pitted and minutely white tuberculate, carunculate" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 619-620).
Habitat/ecology: In Hawaii, "naturalized in open or often shaded, disturbed sites, especially pastures, 300-2,300 m" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 619-620). In Fiji, "sparingly naturalized (or perhaps evanescent) at an elevation of about 750 m" (Smith, 1981; pp. 570-571). "Uncommon in disturbed areas of Tongatapu" (Whistler, 1988; p. 18). "In Chile this species grows in the following environmental conditions: Low altitude, interior valleys; coastal mountains, 500-2000 m; coastal areas, 0-500 m. Humid areas, with almost constant rainfall, short dry periods are possible (generally not longer than 1 month); somewhat dry areas where the drought may last 3-5 months, precipitations of 400-800 mm. are concentrated in winter. Fully exposed to the sun, level areas or slopes facing north" (Chileflora).
