Habit:  herb

Description:  "Herb, prostrate, somewhat succulent, stems hairy, rooting at the nodes.  Leaves simple, opposite, blade elliptic, 4-12 cm long (1 5/8 x 5 in), margins scalloped, surface variegated with pale green, copper, reddish green, or all three colors, pubescent, puckered.  Flowers continuously throughout the year; flowers two to four, borne in a fascicle atop a long, hairy peduncle.  Corolla with fused petals, salverform and two-lipped, tube 2-3 cm long (3/4 - 1 1/4 in), limb of five spreading, nearly round lobes 7-10 mm long (1/4 - 3/8 in), red with a yellow throat, margins toothed and ciliate.  Fruit a two-valved capsule, infrequently formed in cultivation."  (Whistler, 2000; p. 192).

"Spreading herb; leaves short-petiolate, the blades broadly elliptic, up to about 13 x 8 cm., variable in color from coppery or reddish green to clear green, often variegated; corolla tube red on upper surface, yellow with red spots on lower surface and within, the limb orange-red, the 3 lower lobes the longest" (Smith, 1991; pp. 114-115).

Habitat/ecology:  In Palau, naturalized and climbing on rocks and walls in moist, shady places (Space et al., 2003).

Propagation:  Seed

Native range:  "Columbia and Venezuela; now worldwide in cultivation" (Smith, 1991; pp. 114-115).
