Habit:  grass

Description:  "Annual; culms terete, glabrous, erect or somewhat geniculate, 20-100 cm tall; sheaths shorter than internodes, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, margins papillose-ciliate; ligule a row of hairs about 0.5 mm long; blades flat, 5-15 cm long, 2-6 mm wide, scabrous and sometimes sparsely pilose on upper surface; racemes mostly 5-15, 5-10 cm long, somewhat flexuous, ascending or appressed, aggregate on an axis to 5 cm long; spikelets very narrow; glumes acuminate, awn-pointed, scabrous on keel, the first 3-4 mm long, the second 4-5 mm long; fertile floret slender, glabrous except for callus and ciliate upper margins, purplish when mature, 4-5 mm long, scabrous awn 4-6 mm long; rudiment 1-2 mm long, similar to fertile lemma except for for its small size, scabrous awn about 4 mm long"  (Wiggins & Porter, 1971; pp. 836-837).
