Habit: herb
Description: "Strigose, branching, accumbent to erect or prostrate, node-rooting annual herb; leaves lanceolate, elliptic, or oblong, acute-acuminate, acute at base, subsessile, subtrinerved, entire or serrulate, pilose, mostly 2-10 (-15) cm long and 1-4 cm wide; heads terminal and axillary, semiglobose, to 1 cm wide, pedunculate, several to many together, heterogamous; peduncle to 7 cm long; ray-florets 1-2-seriate; involucre of ovate, acute, appressed-pubescent bracts about 6 mm long; receptacle convex, paleaceous; chaffy bracts linear; disc-florets with 4-5-fid corolla; ligules 2.5-3 mm long, entire or bifid; ray-florets pistillate, disc-florets perfect; anthers apically blunt, basally slightly sagittate; style-branches obtuse; achenes of ray-florets 3-angled, of disc-florets 4-angled, all tuberculate, black, glabrous except for a few apical hairs, depressed-truncate at apex, with 1-3 minute marginal teeth, about 2.8 mm long, marginally ribbed" (Stone, 1970; pp. 584-585).
Habitat/ecology: "It is usually found on poorly drained, wet areas; along streams and ditches in marshes; and on the dikes of rice paddies. However, it is also common in lawns and in upland conditions where rainfall is about 1,200 mm or more. It can grow under wet, saline cinditions but is often a weed of drier sites in plantation crops" (Holm et al., 1977; p. 258).
"A weed in moist bottomlands and muddy places" (Wiggins & Porter, 1971). In Guam, "a pantropical weed of open, sunny, wet localities" (Stone, 1970; pp. 584-585). In Hawaii, "naturalized in disturbed areas" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 309, 1860). In Fiji, "found near sea level and said to be locally common...as a naturalized weed in waste places, cultivated areas, and open fields, often near ditches" (Smith, 1991; pp. 274-275). "Uncommon to occasional in wet places such as roadside ditches" (Whistler, 1988; p. 10). In New Guinea, "a common plant of wet situations; foreshores, streamsides, roadside ditches and a weed of wet pasture and poorly-drained patches in plantations. At low altitudes" (Henty & Pritchard, 1975; p. 69).
