Habit:  grass

Description:  "Annuals; culms ascending from a creeping base, 4-30 cm tall.  Sheaths glabrous, rarely with scattered hairs; ligule 0.5-2 mm long, truncate, erose; blades 1-5 cm long, 1-4 mm wide.  Inflorescence composed of 2 (3) digitate racemes, the racemes 1-7 cm long; spikelets ternate on a ribbon-like winged rachis, narrowly ovate-elliptic, 1.2-1.6 mm long; first glume a minute hyaline rim or absent, second glume as long as the spikelet, (3) 5-nerved, glabrous; first lemma as long as the spikelet, 7-nerved, glabrous; second lemma yellowish to brownish, as long as the spikelet, apex often bluish at anthesis, acuminate; palea enclosed within lemma, and similar in texture and color to it.  Caryopsis ellipsoid, pale brown"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1531).

Habitat/ecology:  "Pioneer of sandy or rocky soils in humid areas; forests, dunes, cultivated areas, disturbed sites, roadsides.  0-970 m altitude. Weed of perennial crops, rice, vegetables and disturbed areas."  (Waterhouse & Mitchell, 1998; pp. 65-66).  In Hawai‘i, "forming mats in disturbed sites in grasslands, mesic shrubland and  mesic forest, 10-520 m" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1531).  In Fiji, "now widespread from sea level to 970 m.  It is a weed of cultivation, found along roadsides, in waste places, on open hillsides, and on sandy flats above beaches; it also occurs in dry forest, forming mats in open places, and it has become naturalized along forest trails" (Smith, 1979; pp. 323-324).  "Uncommon in dry sunny areas" (Whistler, 1988; p. 50).

Propagation:  "Seeds dispersed by water and birds.  Vegetative propagation from stolon fragments." (Waterhouse & Mitchell, 1998; pp. 65-66).

Native range:  India, southeastern Asia and Indonesia (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1531). Fosberg et al. (1987; p. 37) list as native.
