Habit:  herb

Description:  "Herbs, perennial, prostrate, 10-50 cm tall, spreading pubescent. Leaves 3-foliolate; petiole ca. 5 mm; terminal leaflet blade obcordate, obtriangular, or obovate, 2.5-10 x 2.5-10 mm, base cuneate, apex truncate, slightly emarginate. Flowers solitary or 2 or 3 in leaf axils. Pedicel 3-8 mm, elongated to 1.3 cm at fruiting. Calyx densely villous, 5-parted; lobes narrowly lanceolate, longer than tube. Corolla purple-red, nearly as long as calyx; standard obcordate, base attenuate, long clawed; wings elliptic, shortly clawed; keel slightly falcate, longer than wings, curved, long clawed. Stamens diadelphous. Legume narrowly oblong, slightly falcate, flat, 5-12 x ca. 2.5 mm, lower suture undulate, upper suture straight, 3-5-jointed; articles nearly quadrate, with short, hooked hairs, reticulate veined"  (Flora of China online).

"Creeping herb; much-branched, somewhat mat-forming; leaves of 3 leaflets, the lower leaves sometimes unifoliolate; leaflets obovate, to obcordate, rounded and emarginate at tip, mostly less than 1 cm long, up to 9 mm wide, sometimes with 2 white marks; flowers few in fascicles, opposite leaves, pedicels 3-8 mm long, lengthening in fruit to just over 1 cm; puberulent; corolla reddish-violet or pale pink, standard obovate, 4-5 mm long; pods up to 17 mm long, about 2.3 mm broad, 3-7-jointed, indehiscent"  (Stone, 1970; p. 332).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "naturalized and common in dry, disturbed sites near the coast and on dry slopes and lava flows, also in lawns, pastures, waste places and along roadsides, 2-440 m"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 670).  In Fiji, "abundantly naturalized at elevations from near sea level to 600 m in lawns, waste places, and villages, on grassy hillsides, and along roadsides and forest tracks" (Smith, 1985; pp. 193-194).  In New Caledonia, "serait le "trèfle indigène" cité comme commun dans les pâturages per Jacques (1935)" (MacKee, 1994; p. 83). "Common in lawns and other disturbed places" (Whistler, 1988; p. 24).

Propagation:  Seed

Native range:  Old World tropics and subtropics (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 670).  "Pantropical, and northward into the southern USA.  In much of the Pacific the species was presumably introduced and has become naturalized eastward to the Societies and Hawai‘i"  (Smith, 1985; pp. 193-194).
