Habit:  sedge

Description:  "Annuals, cespitose, culms to 40 cm high; leaves 1.5-3 mm wide, sheaths often reddish; inflorescence of a few subsessile umbels; spikelets 1-2.5 cm long, 3-5 mm wide, 12-30-flowered; rachilla not winged; achene obovoid, trigonal, the sides slightly concave, brown to almost black."  (Stone, 1970)"Tufted annuals with fibrous roots; culms relatively stout, spreading, 8-35 cm tall, trigonous, smooth.  Leaves a few per culm, basal, blades pale green, linear, flat, shorter than the culm, 1-3 mm wide; sheaths membranous, pale brown, striate.  Inflorescences umbelliform or congested, 2-10 cm long and wide, rays, when present, 2-5, spreading, 0.89-5 cm long, slightly compressed, spikes bearing 3-10 spikelets on an abbreviated axis; involucral bracts 2-4, leaf-like, unequal in length, the longest one 2-3 times as long as the inflorescence; spikelets 15-40-flowered, green, turning pale yellowish brown at maturity, oblong-lanceolate, 10-25 mm long, 2.5-3 mm wide, compressed, rachilla not winged; glumes herbaceous or thin and coriaceous, ovate or broadly so, 3-3.5 mm long, strongly folded, the keel green, acute, 3-nerved on both sides, apex acute with a straight mucro ca. 0.8 mm long; style elongate; stigmas 3.  Achenes dark brown, shiny, broadly obovoid, trigonous, 1-1.3 mm long, minutely puncticulate"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1395).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "naturalized in disturbed, moist sites and coastal areas, 0-300 m" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1395).  In Fiji, "a naturalized adventive, found near sea level in standing water and damp places, along rivers, on seashores, and in coconut plantations" (Smith, 1979; pp. 249-250).  "Occasional in disturbed places" (Whistler, 1988; p. 41).
