Habitat/ecology: Commonly cultivated as an ornamental, escaping to disturbed areas and thickets, sea level to 200 m.
In Hawaii, "a popular ornamental, naturalized at least on Oahu. Naturalized prior to 1871" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 656). In Fiji, "cultivated and also naturalized along roadsides and in villages, clearings, and canefields, at elevations up to about 300 m" (Smith, 1985; pp. 233-234). Arid lowlands in the Galápagos Islands (McMullen, 1999). In New Guinea, "a plant of roadsides, broken land, stream margins, and sometimes a weed of pastures. Widespread at low altitudes, mainly in dry regions" (Henty & Pritchard, 1975; p. 116). In New Caledonia, "introduit paraît-il comme plante ornamentale plutôt que fourragère. Le spécimen de Pancher était cultivé, tous les autres représenteraient des pieds spontanés dans des fourré secondaires" (MacKee, 1994; p. 81).
