Habit: shrub
Description: A "shrub 1-2 m. high...; branchlets medullose to hollow, bluntly quadrangular, the nodes with a broad band of hairs; leaves opposite, the petioles to 20 cm long, the blades thin-chartaceous to membranaceous, broadly ovate, 4-15 (-40) x 7-20 (-38) cm, prominently 7-lobed or the uppermost ones entire, cordate at base, the lobes acute to short-acuminate and remotely denticulate to crenate or entire at margin, minutely strigillose to glabrous above, squamose with peltate scales beneath; inflorescences axillary or terminal, the panicles large, many-flowered, to 45 cm long and broad, the pedicels reddish, filiform, 4-15 mm long, the flowers slightly fragrant; calyx red or orange-red, campanulate, 3-5 mm long, deeply divided, corolla hypocrateriform, orange-red to scarlet or rarely white, puberulent, the tube slender, to 2 cm long, the limb spreading, to 1 cm broad; stamens and style exserted 2.5-3.5 cm beyond corolla throat; fruit drupaceous, greenish blue to black at maturity" (Smith, 1991; p. 210).
Habitat/ecology: "Moist but well-drained soils in sunny places are preferred" (Whistler, 2000; p. 135).
Propagation: Seed
Native range: India, China, and Taiwan south to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and into Malaysia, cultivated and naturalized elsewhere (GRIN).
