Habit:  tree

Description:  "A tree 4-8 m high, usually with copious, short spines.  The leaves seem very variable in what appear to be different cultivars; as seen in the Fijian Region the petioles may be 5-18 mm long and 1.5-6 mm broad across the wings, and the blades vary from 4 x 2 cm to 12 x 7 cm.  The flowers have pale pink or white petals, and the fruits are ovoid or globose, 3.5-6 cm in diameter and greenish yellow when ripe, with thin, adherent peel and greenish, very acid fruit"  (Smith, 1985; p. 520).

Habitat/ecology:  "Key lime is most competitive in areas that receive from about 700 to 1000 mm of mean annual precipitation. It tolerates drought better than any of the other citrus fruit species (Morton 1987). If planted, it will grow but becomes increasingly susceptible to disease in areas that receive up to about 2000 mm of annual precipitation. Most well-drained soils are suitable, particularly those rich in calcium (Morton 1987). Elevations below 900 m are best (Secritaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales 2002). Key lime is intolerant of shade and will not survive long under a closed forest canopy. Cattle grazing encourages it somewhat by eliminating some of the competition without damaging it. Plants are top-killed by fires and hard frosts, but will sprout and survive if the disturbance is not repeated frequently. Naturally reproduced trees may be seen on roadsides, fencerows, abandoned farms, secondary forests, and coastal hammocks"  (Wildland shrubs of the United States and its territories).

In Fiji, "cultivated but also naturalized on edges of forest from near sea level to about 250 m"  (Smith, 1985; p. 520).  In Niue, "limes are extensively naturalised, as well as thriving in a semi-cultivated state in the villages" (Sykes, 1970; p. 182).  In Guam, "persisting in older abandoned farm areas;  occasionally spontaneous from seeds of planted trees" (Stone, 1970; p. 353). In New Caledonia, "est cultivé et souvent naturalisé" (MacKee, 1994; p. 124).

Propagation:  Seed, dispersed by gravity, humans and possibly animal vectors  (Wildland shrubs of the United States and its territories).

Native range:  "Presumably indigenous in Malesia, the lime has spread throughout the tropics and subtropics" (Smith, 1985; p. 520).
