Habit:  herb

Description:  "Erect herbs less than 1 m tall; leaves oblong or oblong-obovate, obtuse or rounded, slightly cuspidate, finely puberulent on both surfaces, 2.5-9 cm long; midrib pale; flowers pink or white (the throat darker); pedicels 1-2 mm long; calyx about 6 mm long; corolla-tube 2.5-3 cm long, lobes 1.5-2 cm long; fruit 2-2.5 cm long, with many small black cylindrical seeds" (Stone, 1970; pp. 480-481).

Several color forms exist.

Habitat/ecology:  "Prefers sandy soils and is often associated with coastal sand dunes" (Csurhes & Edwards, 1998). 

In Hawai‘i, "commonly cultivated and frequently escaping" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 215-216). In Fiji, "often found at low elevations escaped and naturalized in clearings, coconut plantations, and waste places, and along roadsides" (Smith, 1988; p. 85). In Niue, "locally very common in some plantations as well as round some houses" (Sykes, 1970; pp. 44-45). In Tonga, "frequent about villages and cemeteries as an ornamental... Also naturalized along roadsides and waste areas" (Yuncker, 1959; p. 219). In New Caledonia, "assez rare à pré dans les jardins mais répandu à l'état spontané, notamment en arriére-plage" (MacKee, 1994; p. 16). Arid lowlands in the Galápagos Islands (McMullen, 1999; p. 270).
