Habit:  herb

Description:  "Annual nearly glabrous herb; leaves ovate-elliptic to lanceolate, acute-acuminate, up to 12 x 5 cm, usally smaller; petiole to 2.5 cm; flowers usually solitary or paired; calyx 2-3 mm long; but larger in fruit; corolla white, 1.5-2 cm wide; anthers purplish; berry highly variable in shape and flavor according to cultivar, 2-15 cm long, subglobose to ellipsoid or narrowly conic or ovoid, usully bright red, drooping."  (Stone, 1970)

"Growing to a height of one meter or more, its glabrous stem is woody at the bottom and branched near the top.  The leaves are ovate to lanceolate, entire, and petioled.  The drooping, white to yellow flowers grow alone or in pairs or in threes.  The ripe fruit, or pepper, is a many-seeded pod with a leathery outside in various shades of red or yellow and degrees of pungent taste."  (White, 1976)

"Hierbas anuales, algunas veces llegando a ser fruiticosas en la base con la edad, glabras o pubescentes. Hojas generalmente ovadas, hasta de 10 cm o más de largo, glabras o esparcidamente pubescentes. Flores solitarias en las axilas floliares; pedicelos erectos en floracioón con el ápice nutante, en el fruto erectos o péndulos, a menudo agrandados hasta de 4 cm ó más de largo y 4 mm ó de de diámetro, el ápice expandido; cáliz truncado, con 5 ó más costillas y apéndices pequeños, a menudo agrandado en el fruto, hasta de 2 cm de ancho, sin una constrición entre la base y el pedicelo; corolla (5-) 6-9 mera, blanca, de 1-1.5 cm de ancho; anteras verde-azulosas. Fruto una baya, muy variable en tamaño, forma, color y saborentre los cultivares diferentes, desde ovada y escasamente más grande que los frutos de la var. glabriusculum, hasta globose, lanceolado-ovada, cilíndrica o cuadrado-lobada, hasta de 15 cm de diámetro o aún má grande, roja, anaranjada, amarilla, verde o blanca, con sabor picante de diferentes grados o no plicante; semillas amarillas, hasta de 5 mm de largo" (Nee, 1986; pp. 21-26).

Habitat/ecology:  "Desde el nivel del mar hasta todas las altitudes menos las más elevadas.  Todos los ejemplares citados probablemente provienen de plantas cultivadas, pero escapla al cultivo y puede enconrarse en depósitos de desechos y en sitos ruderales" (Nee, 1986; pp. 21-26).
