Operation Miconia

grid sweeps should extend outward from the tree and up to 2 kilometers away, to increase effectiveness and successful detection of outlying plants.  It should be done annually to detect them before they mature.

· Update database with accurate treatment locations and monitoring of biological control agents.
The leaf spot fungus released by Eloise Killgore of Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture (HDOA) is present and showing effects on the leaves of miconia.  It is being monitored by Patrick Conant of HDOA in Hilo.  Some plants that were not part of the intended release were also infected, which is evidence that it is moving on it's own.  Eloise cultured a sample from the newly affected plants that appears to be stronger and more quickly established than the original.  This was applied to gulches accessible by bridges, where conditions are optimal.  A report by Patrick Conant and Eloise Killgore on the progress and impact of the pathogen is attached.  (Attachment 2).

Task 3.  Field control and monitoring operations  (Field Operations Team, BIMAC and cooperators):

· Destroy by chemical and/or mechanical means all accessible Miconia found during surveys in identified in Task 2, above.  Prioritize elimination of small, outlying populations of Miconia, where the threat of expansion is greatest.  High elevation infestations requiring special attention are:  Honaunau, Honalo, Kaloko, Akaka Falls, Onomea, Mt. View, Eden Roc, Fern Forest.
All miconia found during the surveys listed in Task 2. were destroyed unless located on steep, hazardous slopes.  (See tables 6, 7 & 8 for a complete list of sites visited and plants treated during this contract)  Remaining miconia were marked with GPS units and plotted in the GIS database for treatment when special supplies and skills are available for the task.  Table 9. is a list of sites where miconia has been found in or very near the forest reserves, where field crews visited and treated all miconia that were found.
