· Increase awareness and participation by native Hawaiians through
partnerships with Alu Like, Department of Hawaiian Homes, Office of Hawaiian
Affairs and Hawaiian Cultural Groups.
The grant period reflects the last half of 1999 and the beginning of 2000
projects in partnership with the Alu Like work experience program for Hawaiian
youth. In the summer of 1999 Operation Miconia was assisted by 12 youth
workers for 6 weeks. This year we were fortunate enough to have two
sign up for the same 6 week period.
Early attempts to work with the Dept. of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) looked positive, with hopes that a partnership would form to help manage homelands in Hawaii County affected by miconia. We are still working out the logistical details. It is hopeful that DHHL will take the lead at Panaewa, and to enlist the help of prison inmates or other corrections related volunteers.
Task 2. Reconnaissance and mapping (Field Operations Team and BIMAC):
· Expand upon existing surveys. Conduct aerial and/or ground surveys in rural and remote areas that buffer currently known infestations to define outermost boundaries of infestations at priority locations specified:
Existing surveys were expanded in several areas. Air and ground surveying were accomplished in Honalo, Kurtistiown, and Kukuihaele. The Kurtistown flight results may have been better if there were no residences nearby. Since there were, the flight was higher and faster than normal. Honalo was completed in two trips, the second resulted in zero plants and we assume the infestation did not travel beyond 2 kilometers of the center. The Kukuihaele flight detected a clean area where the reporter said he thought he saw a tree, so there is no threat at that site.
Numerous surveys were conducted on the ground, on foot or in vehicles throughout
six districs of Hawaii county during this grant period. The following
set of tables are organized according to A) Top priority sites listed in
the original proposal, B) Second priority sites listed, and C) Additional
sites where surveys and treatment were conducted.
As planned, all ground survey work in the two Kona infestations are complete
for the year. The air survey at Honaunau has not begun, so the crew
may need to re-enter the site at some point to destroy any plants detected
on a flight. The immediate concern for mature trees is no longer present
as the ground crews thoroughly surveyed to 1 kilometer in all directions
from the original and outlying mature plants. An air flight with zero
detection will confirm the boundary mapped by ground crews.
