Operation Miconia

Mechanical Control of Miconia calvescens around Puna Forest
Annual Progress Report, thru June 2000 - p.1

Survey & Control Results

Between July 1999 and June 2000, field crews spent 568 worker days in the five sites around Puna Forest.  About 1,008 acres of forest and 25 miles of roadway were surveyed.  213 trees and 3,591 immature plants were found and destroyed.  Most of the time was spent at sites 27, 28 and 29, where ground surveys were conducted to define the outward boundaries of each infestation.  This work is still in progress.    See survey and control results tables 1 and 2 below, for more details.

Next Steps

During the next 12 months, work will continue at these five sites until all mature plants are destroyed and outward boundaries of the infestations are defined.  Emphasis will be placed on surveying at sites 25 and 60.  We are expecting to hire additional field crews, with money appropriated by the Legislature.  National park staff and volunteers will also assist.  We also plan to survey Puna Forest by air before the end of December, 2000.
