Operation Miconia

2) Treat new and remote Miconia populations using a combination of mechanical and chemical methods. Unit of measure is acres treated and plants killed.

New work was accomplished this quarter in two locations.  An individual tree was reported, confirmed and destroyed at site 92-Kamuela.  Additional road surveys and resident interviews were conducted in the area and no other miconia were found.   Work began at the newly found site 93-Hale Puaa, in lower Puna.  Reported to the Miconia project and confirmed by field crews, this well established site had several mature trees and thousands of seedlings.  Field crews have installed control transects and volunteers have taken the lead on control work.  The extent of the infestation has not yet been defined.

Reomte field work was conducted five sites.  Field work at the S. Kona site 2-Honaunau was completed in July, pending an aerial survey.  In North Hilo at site 4-Ninole, road surveys were conducted and a botanical garden was visited.  One mature miconia and a few young plants were found and destroyed during road surveys and an individual potted miconia six feet tall was found at the botanical garden.  The managers did not surrender the plant and it remains at that site, alive.  In Puna, remote work was conducted at four sites where satellite infestations in subdivisions threaten to spill into remote forests.  The extent of these infestations are not defined yet and aerial surveys are being planned.

3) Treat large flowering trees in older established stands using mechanical, chemical, and biological control methods.  Unit of measure is acres treated and number of trees killed.

· Continue to kill mature trees along the Onomea scenic drive, Ainaloa, and Leilani as time and weather permits.  This effort will rely largely on volunteers and community groups.

Miconia eradication is ongoing at older established sites with mature trees.   No volunteers or DLNR Forestry crews were available between July and September, and little time was spent on this task this quarter.  Field crews and Alu Like summer youth worked at Onomea and Leilani Estates to treat mature trees visible from roadsides on two occasions.
