Presentations and Press Releases

Miconia presentations came in a variety of forms in August and September 2000. Paula Helfrich, miconia volunteer and member of the Hawaii Island Economic Development Board, arranged a series of radio talk show interviews with Nelson Ho and herself, to talk about the progress and events related to the program. Calls to the Miconia hotline were generated from this effort. Also in August was the Annual Hawaii Conservation Conference. A poster was prepared and presented that describes global information system technology and it's use in Miconia control. In September the Kona Farm Fair (West Hawaii) and the Hawaii County Fair (East Hawaii) donated booth space to the project. East and West Hawaii residents visited the booths and talked with staff about their Miconia concerns. Visitors who had never seen Miconia before were able to see and feel a fresh cut sample, were given instructions about what to do if they found some, and several signed up to do volunteer work.

One public service announcement and one feature story were published. The PSA announced a call for volunteers to control Miconia at site 60-Pahoa. The Hawaii Island Journal, a new publication on the island, featured the Miconia control effort in Kona, and included background information related to the island wide problem, along with photographs.
